The Gala of Trees
This fun Lake of the Ozarks annual event was formerly hosted at Bootleggers Sports Book & Grill, but this year Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is extremely proud to have inherited such a marvelous event. It all starts with a kickoff party on Thursday, November 17 to unveil the decorated wreaths and trees, and then the silent auction will take place from Thursday night until Saturday night, November 19. Dale Blue will be here to entertain the crowd on Saturday while we find out who the lucky winners are!
We explained the big details in last week's blog "Join us For The 7th Annual Gala of Trees," but here are the basics. Various businesses have volunteered to decorate trees and wreaths donated by Lake Regional Hospital with all kinds of unique and exciting decorations. People from the lake area are encouraged to come in, check them all out, and then bid on their favorites. Winning bidders will get to take these pre-decorated beauties home with them when the auction is over.
Here is a peek at last year's Gala of Trees, followed by a little more information about the wonderful organizations that are donating the money raised to many local families needing a hand this holiday season.
Candyland
The 33rd Annual Candyland at the Lake of the Ozarks opens on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 in the Stonecrest Mall, the day before the Gala of Trees at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse. It is put on by the Lake Ozark Rotary to promote generosity during the Christmas season through gift donations for underprivileged children in the Lake area. People are encouraged to visit Candyland, pick one of more candy canes with children's Christmas wishes on them, purchase the items, and then return them for Candyland's Rotarian volunteers to wrap and deliver.
Proceeds from the Gala of Trees silent auction sales will go toward buying some of these gifts. The Lake Ozark Rotary's mission is for leaders to come together with a shared vision and cooperation making a difference through service above self.
The Idiots Club
This group describes themselves as "a charity dedicated to helping youth in need in the Lake area, while in the pursuit of silliness!" They make our community a better place, and they do it in a way that allows them to have fun while they're at it. The Lake of the Ozarks Idiots Club was founded by a couple of retired educators, Denny and Danna Hiner, who witnessed firsthand the problems that students dealt with on a daily basis.
According to their website, currently over 60% of the children in the lake area live at or below the federal poverty line. The group works through social agencies and civic groups, as well as many area schools, including School of the Osage, Camdenton, Climax Springs, and Macks Creek, to discover the needs of children in the area. In the past, they have been able to supply items such as shoes for sports, school art supplies, dental care, Buddy Packs food for kids, clothing, school club participation fees, car batteries for working kids, and much much more. Through the Gala of Trees, they are able to provide a happy holiday for families that might not otherwise have one at all. Idiots Club member, Christie Janssen, has organized the Gala of Trees from the beginning.
