The ONLY Way to Celebrate National Chicken Wing Day is With Our Wobbly Wings!

July 29 is annually set aside to celebrate one of the most popular appetizers there is - chicken wings! If you happen to be in the lake area when National Chicken Wing Day rolls around, you need to make your way on over to Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Osage Beach to get a mouthful of the best chicken wings at the Lake of the Ozarks! (If you're not already near the lake area, this would be a perfect time to arrange a vacation!)

Wobbly Wings at the Boot
Anyone that knows how to make hot wings has their own special way of doing it, but we're positive that the way our BBQ restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks prepares them is simply the best! Just what makes our Wobbly wings so darn good? Well...

Our hickory-smoking expertise is a big part of that. First, we take only the finest jumbo chicken wings and generously coat them in our house dry rub. Next, they are slow-roasted in our hickory pit to ensure the perfect degree of doneness. (With years of practice, we've got it down to a science!)

Once they're ready for serving, the best hot wings at the Lake of the Ozarks are so mouthwateringly delicious that they can easily be enjoyed sauceless. Of course, if you prefer a "sauced" wing, as most people do, we've got some amazing varieties for you to give a try.

  • BBQ - Our house recipe sauce. A great addition to anything!
  • Original - A mustard-based sauce like no other. Try it and you'll be hooked!
  • Chipotle Buffalo - Our version of a traditional Buffalo sauce.
  • Teriyaki - Sweet and delicious!
  • Trashed - Our smoked wings deep-fried before serving.

Wings & More
We've also got a couple of sampler plates on the appetizer menu that allow you to enjoy our awesome Wobbly wings alongside some additional BBQ favorites.
  • Ribbies & Wings
Two of our most popular items - 4 individual pork spare ribs with our house recipe BBQ sauce and 6 Wobbly wings with your choice of sauce.
  • The Wobbly Boots Sampler
Even more of some of the best of what we have to offer! This plate contains 4 Wobbly wings, 4 spare ribs slathered in BBQ sauce, 4 famous onion rings, and 4 bacon wrapped shrimp.

The Origin(s) of Wings
Ever wonder exactly who came up with the brilliant idea of serving chicken wings the way we know and love them today? Well, the following stories may give you an idea but, as is the case with most legendary tales, not everyone agrees on the exact origin.

They were definitely first introduced in Buffalo, New York in 1964, hence the popular name "Buffalo" wings. The rest of their actual history is up for debate.
  • The most popular origin stories revolve around Teressa Bellissimo, a Buffalo, New York restaurant owner. One account chalks the appetizer creation up to a mistake. She and her husband Frank were expecting a delivery of necks, which they used to make spaghetti sauce for their establishment, the Anchor Bar. Frank convinced her to get creative rather than waste the shipment. Teressa chose to deep-fry the naked wings, toss them in some hot sauce, and serve them up with bleu cheese dressing and celery sticks.
  • Their son, Dominic, remembers the story a little differently. He says that his mother created the wings after he asked her to make up something special late on a Friday night. Most of their customers were Catholic and weren't eating meat on Fridays. Since they had been spending lots of money in the bar that evening, Dominic wanted to offer them a special treat at midnight as a thank you for their patronage.
  • One last twist on this particular tale was that Teressa came up with her amazing wings one night when Dominic and his friends from college came in hungry. The one thing that all of these stories have in common is Teressa and her delicious creativity.
  • There is one story that does not involve Mrs. Bellissimo. John Young says that he grew up eating chicken wings and he created a special "Mambo Sauce" to go with them. His wings were breaded before they were deep-fried and the drummies and flats were not separated before cooking. He registered the name of his restaurant, Wings 'n' Things, in the mid-'60s before he left Buffalo in 1970.

While we cannot tell you which story is the real one, we can tell you where to get the best chicken wings in the lake area, and that's out of the kitchen at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse! Whether you order them as an appetizer to enjoy before your meal of the best BBQ at the Lake of the Ozarks or have them as a meal on their own, let us know how many you want and we'll make it happen!

Our Fried Pickles Are Kind of a Big "Dill"!

The southern United States, along with a few other BBQ meccas of the U.S.A., had a big influence on the hybrid-style of 'que we serve here at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Osage Beach. In addition to inspiring us to create the best hickory-smoked BBQ at the Lake of the Ozarks, we also borrowed a few other southern favorites to fill out our extensive menu.

For example, fried pickles began as a delicacy throughout the southern United States. This delicious treat eventually headed north and we all fell in love with the taste too. Our Lake of the Ozarks BBQ restaurant found our own way to cook up this fantastic dish that makes it a "must-try" item from our appetizer menu.

Fried Pickles at the Boot
Here at the Boot, we serve up a half-pound of pickle chips with every order. They are hand-breaded in our specially seasoned flour, fried to a golden brown, and served with a delicious Chipotle Ranch dipping sauce. Either as a snack, an appetizer, or side dish, the fried pickles at Wobbly Boots BBQ are always an excellent choice.

So, Who Created the Fried Pickle?
As with many origin stories, there is more than one. There is a record of a "French Fried Pickle" recipe being published as early as 1962 for the Food Editors Conference in New York. That said, here are a few more claims which may be true.

Another popular story, which seems to have come about much too late to be the original, is from the Hollywood Cafe out of Hollywood, Mississippi. Their tale from 1969 begins with a crowded restaurant and a cook without enough catfish to feed them all. In desperation, he reached for the industrial-sized jar of dill pickles that was handy, rolled them in the catfish batter, dropped them in the fryer, and served them to the patrons. They were an immediate hit.

The most popular story, which seems to fit into a more plausible time frame, is out of Atkins, Arkansas. In 1963, Bernell "Fatman" Austin owned the Duchess Drive-In across the highway from the Atkins Pickle Plant. (FYI: Atkins is known as the pickle capital of Arkansas!) Staring across the street at the pickle plant, Bernell was inspired to create a recipe.

That particular recipe is a well-guarded, family secret to this day. You can now only get a taste of Bernell's original creation once a year at the annual Picklefest held each May in Atkins. The family dishes up about 2,500 orders of the "Fatman's Original Fried Dill Pickles" at every festival and the money raised is used for scholarships and charities that Bernell supported.

Sometime in the late 1990s, three high school friends brought the southern deep-fried pickle to the Minnesota State Fair, calling them the "Preferred Pickle." They were so popular, the same three friends began manufacturing them under KWF Foods and selling them to the foodservice industry.

The Boot's Are the Best!
It looks as if no one can quite agree on exactly how or when the fried pickle was created. One thing that we do know for sure is that the fried pickles at our Lake of the Ozarks family restaurant are the best darn fried pickles you've ever tasted! There's only one way for you to truly know that's a fact though, and that's to come into Wobbly Boots Roadhouse soon and give them a try! Believe us, you won't regret the trip!
