A History of the Classic Moscow Mule

The best bar at the Lake of the Ozarks happens to reside inside of the best BBQ restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks! Not only can you watch all of your favorite sports action, enjoy Happy Hour 6 days a week, and order just about anything your heart desires from our fully stocked bar, but Wobbly Boots Roadhouse recently updated our drink menu too.

The latest collection of creative cocktails to be featured on our in-house drink menu are the perfect companion to any meal. You will find selections from a variety of different categories: Specialty Drinks, Frozens, Bourbon Avenue, Martinis, Classic Cocktails, and our incredible wine list. Today, we will be highlighting a popular classic that we have put a few of our own spins on - The Mule!

The Moscow Mule - NOT From Russia!
Contrary to what the name might lead you to believe, the original Moscow Mule was created right here in the good ol' U.S.A. In 1939, John G. Martin, of G.F. Heublien Brothers out of Hartford, Connecticut, bought Smirnoff vodka. Little did he realize, Americans were not too fond of vodka at the time and the product proved hard to sell.

Martin put his head together with Jack Morgan, the owner of a Los Angeles pub named Cock 'n' Bull, to come up with a way to move the vodka. Morgan's company produced their own house brand of ginger beer, which was also hard to convince customers to buy. In an effort to help each other out, they combined these two liquids, along with a squeeze of lemon, and a new cocktail was born. (Although today, you are more likely to have it with a squeeze of lime.)

Why the Copper Mug?
If you order a Mule drink, it's not authentic unless it is served in a copper mug. Many believe that this is because the copper keeps the drink the perfect, ice-cold temperature. While the copper mug does seem to make the drink much colder while you are drinking it, the original reason for the device was a publicity stunt.

Martin traveled the country introducing bartenders to this new delicious cocktail. Once sold, he would ask them to pose for a Polaroid picture holding the copper mug and a bottle of Smirnoff. One photo would be left at the establishment for advertisement, while the other picture was taken to the next bar to show off the fact that their competitor was selling this popular new drink, so they should too!

Mule Drinks at the Boot
Your favorite BBQ restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks offers an entire section of our drink menu that is filled with a unique variety of specialty Mule recipes. Every one of our Mule drinks is topped with Missouri-made Ginger Beer, then garnished with a lime and an orange for added freshness and flavor. Also, each one that you order will arrive in that infamous copper mug. Here are our versions of this classic cocktail.

  • Moscow Mule - Made with 360 Vodka
  • Zesty Mule - Made with Absolut Citron or Mandarin Vodka
  • Johnny's Mule - Made with Effen Apple Vodka
  • Fruity Mule - Made with Cruzan Coconut Rum
  • The Highball - Made with Basil Hayden Kentucky Bourbon
  • Rhubarb Mule - Made with Organic Rhubarb Tea Liqueur
  • Mango Mule - Made with Finlandia Mango Vodka
  • Seasonal Mule - Ask your server for the newest seasonal flavor option.

Any fan of the Mule will love our Wobbly Boots Roadhouse versions. If this is a brand new drink to you, then we believe ours will make you a fan. The next time that you stop in for a bit of the best BBQ at the Lake of the Ozarks, order up one of our Mule Drinks. An excellent compliment to an incredible meal.

Menu Showdown: Ribs vs. Wings

Here we go. It's time for another Wobbly Boots Roadhouse Menu Showdown! In honor of football season, we're pitting a couple of our mouth-watering BBQ items against each other that any football fan would love to munch on while watching the game.

The best BBQ at the Lake of the Ozarks comes out of our kitchen, and two of our most popular items are the Wobbly Wings and our BBQ Ribs. Both equally as delicious as the next... or are they? We're asking all of you to try to pick a favorite between these two hickory-smoked dishes. Think you can? Get plenty of napkins ready, because this could get messy.

Ribs
You simply can't think "BBQ" and not imagine a great big plate of tender, juicy ribs. Here at the Boot, you've got two choices when it comes to ribs: Baby Back Ribs and Classic Pork Spare Ribs

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse, Lake of the Ozarks, BBQ

They each begin their cooking journey by getting coated in our special dry rub. After that, we slow-smoke them over hickory logs to perfection, and the Baby Back Ribs get a light turn on the grill. Next, we coat all of the ribs with our secret recipe house-made BBQ sauce. Depending on how hungry you are, these are available by the slab and half slab.

Wobbly Wings
Next up, the tenderest chicken wings you're going to find anywhere. Our award-winning Wobbly Wings are pretty hard to resist. These jumbo, bone-in wings are given a similar treatment to what the ribs go through, but turn out with a flavor that's all their own. We start with that special dry rub, then slow-roast them in the hickory pit until they are simply irresistible.

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse, Lake of the Ozarks, BBQ

The flavor is so amazing, there's really no need for any sauce, but we've got four incredible options for you if you happen to enjoy sauce on your hot wings.

  • BBQ: Our house recipe sauce. A great addition to anything!
  • Original: A sauce like no other. Try it, you'll be hooked.
  • Chipotle Buffalo: Our version of traditional buffalo.
  • Teriyaki: Sweet meets heat. Delicious!

Too tough to choose?
It's nearly impossible to choose one of these unbelievable dishes over the other. Don't stress about it though, because we've made it easy for you to have both! Our appetizer menu offers a couple of different options so that you can enjoy our award-winning wings and tender ribs together.

First of all, the Ribbies & Wings plate is exactly what it sounds like. A big plate filled with 4 individual pork spare ribs and half a dozen Wobbly wings. If you can handle just a bit more deliciousness, you should give the Wobbly Boots Sampler a try. Not only does it feature 4 Wobbly wings and 4 spare ribs, but it also contains 4 of our giant, hand-breaded onion rings along with 4 large bacon wrapped gulf shrimp. Definitely a winner!

Now that we've got your mouth watering and your stomach rumbling, make your way on over to the best BBQ restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks. We're playing all the games on our 21 TVs, including the giant projection screen. We're also smoking meat daily, so there will be plenty of all of your Wobbly Boots Roadhouse favorites to keep you filled up and satisfied.
