The History of the Fried Pickle

Fried pickles began as a delicacy throughout the southern United States. This delicious treat eventually headed north, and the best BBQ restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks has got them. Either as a snack, appetizer, or side dish, the fried pickles at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse are an excellent choice.

We serve up a half pound of pickle chips, hand-breaded in our special seasoned flour, then fried to a golden brown. Chipotle Ranch is the preferred dipping sauce around here. As amazing as our own recipe tastes, we cannot take credit for coming up with the original idea of frying pickles.

Who claims the original recipe?

As with many origin stories, there is more than one. There is record of a "French Fried Pickle" recipe being published as early as 1962 for the Food Editors Conference in New York.

Another popular story, which seems to have come about much too late to be the original, is from the Hollywood Cafe out of Hollywood, Mississippi. Their tale from 1969 begins with a crowded restaurant and a cook without enough catfish to feed them all. In desperation, he reached for the industrial-sized jar of dill pickles that was handy, rolled them in the catfish batter, dropped them in the fryer, and served them to the patrons. They were an immediate hit.

The most popular story, which seems to fit into a more plausible time frame, is out of Atkins, Arkansas. In 1963, Bernell "Fatman" Austin owned the Duchess Drive-In across the highway from the Atkins Pickle Plant. (FYI: Atkins is known as the pickle capital of Arkansas!) Staring across the street at the pickle plant, Bernell was inspired to create a recipe.

That particular recipe is a well-guarded, family secret to this day. You can now only get a taste of Bernell's original creation once a year at the annual Picklefest held in May in Atkins. The family dishes up about 2,500 orders of the "Fatman's Original Fried Dill Pickles" at every festival, and the money raised is used for scholarships and charities that Bernell supported.

Sometime in the late 1990's, three high school friends brought the southern deep-fried pickle to the Minnesota Sate Fair, calling them the "Preferred Pickle." They were so popular, the same three friends began manufacturing them under KWF Foods and selling them to the food service industry.

Our fried pickles are the best!

Regardless of how the fried pickle found its way to the Midwest or who actually invented it, the best BBQ restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks has perfected it! The next time you have a craving for some Wobbly Boots BBQ, add an order of our Fried Pickles to the mix. We believe you are going to love them.

Crawl for the Roses This Saturday at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse

This Saturday, May 7, 2016, the fastest thoroughbreds will make their "Run for the Roses" at the Kentucky Derby. Your favorite BBQ restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks will not only be showing this infamous race, but we'll be celebrating it in style.

While the Kentucky Derby has been taking place since 1875, this year Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is participating in the Lake of the Ozarks 1st Annual "Crawl for the Roses" sponsored by Four Roses Kentucky Bourbon. Our sister restaurant, Shorty Pants Lounge & Marina, will also be one of the stops hosting this exciting party.

Crawl for the Roses

Saturday, May 7, from 3-6 pm, our bartenders will be filling Four Roses Bourbon souvenir cups with special race day cocktails. While the horses race for that coveted garland of red roses, Wobbly Boots will have roses for the ladies simply for joining us (while supplies last.) We will even be holding a competition of our own for both the ladies and the gentlemen.

A $50 gift certificate will go the customer with the best derby hat or bonnet. Wearing an extravagant hat is a derby tradition. It's an incredible way to make a bold fashion statement, it keeps the sun out of one's eyes at the track, and over the years these hats have become a symbol of good luck. The fancier the hat, the better the luck.

Four Roses Bourbon

Four Roses Bourbon out of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky was voted the American Whiskey Distiller of the Year by Whisky Magazine in 2011, 2012, 2013, & 2015. They start out with 10 distinctive Bourbon recipes, then mingle those together by hand to create their award-winning flavor. It takes a little extra time, but it's time well spent. This brand has survived Prohibition, the Great Depression, two World Wars, and 40 years of exile from the U.S. You simply have to taste it for yourself to see how incredible Four Roses Bourbon truly is. They have been crafting it since 1888. The Kentucky Derby is only a mere 8 years older than this delicious liquor.

Join the party!

We expect to see each and every one of you, in your very finest hats of course, right here at the best place to watch sports at the Lake of the Ozarks. The race may only last a couple of minutes, but we'll keep the party going as long as we're all together and having a good time. Make it a point to be at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse between 3-6 pm to join in all of the race day excitement.
