How To Pack The Perfect BBQ Picnic Basket

The weather has been so beautiful lately, you may hate the idea of having to come indoors to eat. Good news, because the best BBQ at the Lake of the Ozarks actually travels well. With the proper packing techniques, you can enjoy your favorite Wobbly Boots Roadhouse BBQ and the amazing spring weather outside at the same time!

BBQ is a great picnic food, and picking it up at Wobbly Boots to go means you don't have to bother with any of the cooking. You can simply enjoy the afternoon outside with everyone else instead of standing at that hot grill.

The most important thing to take care of when you picnic is the food safety. Hot foods need to be kept hot, and cold foods cold. Insulated coolers can handle both of those tasks.

COLD FOODS
Traveling with cold foods, like cole slaw or potato salad (which we sell both of in bulk for larger groups) is easy. You can use sealed containers and ice, but to make sure that ice doesn't melt and leak into the food, you might want to use ice packs instead.

An even better idea is to freeze water bottles and use those for your ice packs. They take up more space to keep the food in place inside the cooler, plus, once they melt you have cold water to drink.

HOT FOODS
Hot foods can take a little more work to pack if you won't be eating them right away. You'll want to pack it into your cooler as soon as soon as you pick up your order. Wrapping the containers in aluminum foil can help to keep the heat in longer. Microwavable hot packs are another great source of heat for keeping our delicious, hickory-smoked meats and home style side dishes warm and ready to eat.

The more insulation, the better for keeping all of that warmth inside the cooler and around your food. Wrapping the food, along with a hot pack, inside a towel traps in heat. If there is extra space inside the "hot" cooler, you can use more rolled up towels to keep everything in place. Keep the lid closed until serving time, and open it as little as possible.

LEFTOVERS
If there's any food left after everyone has had their fill, pack it back up as soon as you're done. Try to not leave food out for more than 1 hour. It is suggested that anything left out for more than 2 hours should be thrown away. (But hey, with BBQ this good, there probably won't be anything left to pack away!)

Go ahead and keep the cold and warm foods separated so that the warm items don't add any heat to the things that are already cold. Keep the coolers in a shaded area, out of direct sunlight until you are ready to head back home.

After a wonderful lunch full of the best BBQ at the Lake of the Ozarks, you may want to get back to the air conditioning and cool off. That's when you can swing back by Wobbly Boots Roadhouse and join us for an ice cold drink and maybe even catch a game. We're always here for you, 7 days a week, all year long, no matter what the season.
