Labor Day Weekend - Only the Beginning of September Fun at the Lake

Some consider Labor Day weekend to be the last big weekend at the lake. While it is a big one, it's far from the last! Wobbly Boots Roadhouse has rounded up a list of some of the amazing things happening in the lake area during the month of September, beginning with Labor Day weekend and going way beyond that. The best BBQ restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks does not shut down at the end of the summer season, so we'll be here to feed you after you enjoy each of the following events. 

Labor Day Weekend
Sept. 1-4
Wobbly Boots BBQ is ready to host a large crowd of people over this holiday weekend, but don't forget, you can always get our mouthwatering BBQ to go too! Order up some tasty, hickory-smoked goodness to take along with you on the boat, for a picnic in the park, or even a big backyard gathering. Let us do the cooking, and you just enjoy the weekend!

If you're wanting to do a little lakeside dining, our sister restaurants should be at the top of your list. Shorty Pants Lounge & Marina offers the most amazing Cajun food at the Lake of the Ozarks, plus they have a full-service marina and gas dock to keep you stocked up for a day on the water. Dog Days Bar & Grill not only offers incredible lakeside dining, but also 2 brand new amazing pools (1 with a swim-up bar) and a Labor Day Log Jam at the Lake event on Saturday. Both places will have some of the best musicians headlining their stages too. Between the three of us, you definitely don't have to worry about going hungry or thirsty over the holiday weekend! 

Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge
Sept. 9-10
The Hy-Vee/ Target parking lot will be home to this free community event. The challenge brings hundreds of U.S. and Canadian municipal fire departments together to compete in a series of games that demonstrate the rigor's of their physically demanding profession. This challenge has been seen on ESPN for years. This particular event will also host a Kids' Challenge, which is a mini-version of the main obstacle course. 

11th Annual Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest
Sept. 13-17
This event, with more than 200 biker-friendly bars and restaurants involved, is too large to be contained in just one spot. You'll see exciting things happening all over the lake area, including the annual Passport Ride that includes a stop at our Lake of the Ozarks BBQ restaurant. Motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the country will descend upon the lake area for scenic rides, live music, a Harley-Davidson bike giveaway, and much, much more! 

Lake of the Ozarks Air Show
Sept. 23
The lake area knows how to put on entertaining shows in the water, on the land, and even in the air! The Camdenton Memorial Lake Regional Airport will host a day of celebration for our military, aviation, and more from 7:30 am - 4 pm. Numerous air show acts will take place throughout the day, and there will be plenty to see on the ground too. There's even a giant Ping Pong Ball Drop where the kids can race to pick up balls dropped from a plane to win special prizes.  

Pumkin Chunkin' Palooza
Sept. 30
This family friendly event is a great way to say good-bye to September and get ready for October's fall fun. This one takes place at Ozarks Amphitheater in Camdenton from 11 am - 6 pm. There will be face painting, a petting zoo, climbing wall, carnival rides, and more for the kids. The adults will be able to enjoy Missouri wine and craft beer tastings, and for everyone there will be food vendors, live music, games, hay rides, pumpkin decorating contests, and more. Of course, the main event involves pumpkins being launched and hurled through the air every hour. Quite a sight to see!  

Labor Day weekend doesn't have to be seen as the end of summer, but rather the beginning of a month full of excitement here at the lake! Some of the waterfront attractions will begin shutting down during the weeks after the holiday, but our family friendly BBQ restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks is open 7 days a week all year long. Why Does Bacon Taste So Darn Good?

Who can resist the glorious smell of bacon wafting through the air? Even vegetarians' mouths start to water when they smell it! It's a natural, irresistible reaction that is pretty hard to control. We get to see this effect on a daily basis here at our Lake of the Ozarks BBQ restaurant every time we pull that incredible meat out of our smoker, and each time it is served to one of our hungry customers. 

Why does this meat in particular evoke such a euphoric feeling from nearly everyone on the planet? Well, Wobbly Boots Roadhouse did a little research on the subject, and we found out there are some scientific reasons why bacon is so appealing. 

The Science of Bacon
Some foods contain a single molecule that is responsible for what you taste. For example, bananas and almonds are very distinctive flavors that mainly rely on a single molecule for flavor, but as yummy as they may be to you, those are foods that aren't too difficult to resist. 

Bacon, on the other hand, has a phenomenal combination of factors that come together to create that crispy goodness. The best explanation that we found came from an online article from the BBC. It gets a bit scientific, but extremely interesting to us bacon-lovers. 

" 'Some of the major flavour players are the result of the pork belly's fat breaking down,' says Guy Crosby, food scientist and science editor at America's Test Kitchen. 'It's not just the white marbling that's in play. The cell membranes of the muscle tissue contain fatty acids that disintegrate during cooking to yield a bouquet of flavourful compounds like aldehydes, furans, and ketones. By themselves, some of these molecules have distinct tastes or smells – furans have a sweet, nutty, caramel-like note, aldehydes a green, grassy note, and ketones tend to be buttery – but whatever they are doing together seems to be key. If any of these classes of molecules were missing from the overall bacon flavour, you would notice it.' "

So basically, the combination of sweet, nutty, caramel-like notes, + green, grassy notes, + a buttery flavor all come together in a magical way to create the magnificent bacon flavor we all know and love! The bacon that you get from our family-friendly restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks takes our bacon's flavor one step further when we put it in the smoker.

Hickory-Smoking Makes It Better

The rubs and spices that are added to bacon play a part in the final flavor too. The chemical reactions of everything combined create a variety of tastes, pointing the various molecules in different directions. 

The act of smoking bacon causes the meat to take on yet another set of flavor compounds. Wobbly Boots BBQ's hickory-smoked meats go through a long, slow cooking process, giving all of our meats, including the bacon, a flavor that is the best in the Midwest. The smoke that comes from our hickory wood releases both acrid and sweet smelling compounds that combine to add that amazing extra flavor that puts our bacon on everyone's favorite foods list.

Be a Part of Team Shannon at This Silent Auction Benefit April 8, 2017

Our Lake of the Ozarks BBQ restaurant is happy to be able to provide you with a delicious experience when you go out to eat, but sometimes it's not all about the food. We get to know our repeat customers pretty well, and after a while, they start to feel like a part of the Wobbly Boots Roadhouse family. When one of our "family" is in need, it makes us feel good to be able to help where we can. 

A wonderful young woman in our community, Shannon Miller, was recently diagnosed with cervical cancer. Her friends and family decided to throw a silent auction benefit on Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 3:30-5:30 pm. The money raised will help to pay for the expenses that come along with treatment, and Wobbly Boots Roadhouse was more than happy to offer a place to host it. 

Shannon is a homemaker to three beautiful children, and even cares for friends' children on occasion. She lives at home with her high school sweetheart turned husband, Brandon. Shannon is currently employed with Staunton Hospital and plans to work as long as her health allows. Chemotherapy and radiation treatment will be necessary 5 days a week for 5 weeks at St. Mary's Hospital, and additional treatments may be needed. 

Prayers, kindness, and support for Shannon and her family are greatly appreciated, and if you have a chance to attend the benefit night at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse, that would be wonderful too. A large number of silent auction items have been donated already, and more will be added over the next few weeks.
