Our Incredibly Immense Whiskey Menu At Wobbly Boots Roadhouse

One thing that we absolutely love to pair with the best BBQ at the Lake of the Ozarks, as well as everything else on our extensive menu, is a good whiskey. The bar at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is stocked with plenty of delicious varieties to choose from - more than 45 varieties, as a matter of fact!

If you are already a whiskey drinker, then you most likely have a favorite. Anyone that is new to the drink may be a little overwhelmed at all of the choices. It's tough to know where to begin when there are so many to pick from. Here's a little background information on this delicious spirit to help you make that decision.

Whiskeys differ in the main ingredient, alcoholic content, and quality. Malt whiskeys are made up mainly of malted barley, and grain whiskeys can be made from any type of grains, such as corn, rye, or wheat. Depending on the way a distiller combines the ingredients, the following types can be produced:

Blended - different types of whiskey are blended together, sometimes from different distilleries

Single Malt - made from only one type of malted grain and from only one distillery; unless it is labeled as "single cask," it may be a blend of more than one year from more than one cask

Nearly every country makes its own version, but the four featured below are the most popular, and Wobbly Boots BBQ happens to have them all behind our bar.

American Whiskey
We currently have 39 American whiskeys on our menu, 27 from Kentucky and 4 from Tennessee.
  • Bourbon - This is made from a mash of at least 51% corn. The majority of American bourbon comes from Kentucky.
  • Rye - This is distilled from a mash of at least 51% rye.
  • Tennessee - What makes whiskey from this state special is that it must be filtered through charcoal. Otherwise, the distillation process is similar to that of a bourbon.
  • Examples from our bar
    • Blanton's (Frankfort, KY)
    • Angels' Envy Port Cask (Louisville, KY)
    • Jim Beam Black (Clermont, KY)
    • Gentleman Jack (Lynchburg, TN)
    • Hudson Baby Bourbon Rye (Gardiner, NY)
    • Ozark Distillery Whiskey (Osage Beach, MO)

Canadian Whiskey
Whiskey from our neighbors to the north tends to be light-bodied and fruity, and they are most often blends. It must be made in Canada and aged at least 3 years.
  • Examples from our bar:
    • Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye (Toronto, Ontario)
    • Black Velvet (Valleyfield, Quebec)

Irish Whiskey
Similar to Canadian whiskey, yet with a more robust flavor. It must be made in Ireland and aged at least 3 years.
  • Examples from our bar:
    • Jameson Irish Whiskey (Cork, Ireland)
    • Jameson Irish Whiskey Caskmates (Cork, Ireland)

Scotch Whisky
Once again, this must be distilled in the country it is named for - Scotland. It must mature in an oak cask at least 3 years. Most are distilled two times, but some go through the process more, as many as twenty times. You might also notice that any whisky from Scotland does not contain the "e" in the name.
  • Examples from our bar:
    • Glennfiddich 14 Year (Dufftown, Scotland)
    • The Glenlivet 12 Year (Banffshire, Scotland)
    • Chivas Regal (Keith, Scotland)
    • Monkey Shoulder (Dufftown, Scotland)

If you want to become an aficionado, there is a lot more to learn, but that basic information should get you started. Once you decide which whiskey to try first, one of our talented bartenders should be able to help you pick out a few delicious menu items that will go well with it. Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is not only a great place to hone your whiskey skills, it's a tasty place to do it too!

Scotch Lover? You Will Be With Our Tasty Cocktails!

Wednesday, July 27, 2016 is National Scotch Day, so this week is the perfect time to highlight the tasty scotches we have at the best bar at the Lake of the Ozarks. If you aren't already a fan, we bet one taste of our Wobbly Boots Roadhouse creations will turn you into one.

Scotch Whisky, Whiskey, or Bourbon?

First of all, a little clarification. All whiskies are made with some type of fermented grain mash. There are slight differences to the recipes of each, but a big factor in what they are called is the location of where it is made.

Here in the United States, we have whiskey and bourbon. Generally, whiskey (with an -ey on the end) is from Tennessee, and Bourbon must be made in Kentucky. Irish whiskey must be from... you guessed it- Ireland.

Scotch whisky (no "e" in the name) can only be titled scotch if it is made in Scotland. The main ingredient is malted barley, and it must be aged in an oak cask for at least 3 years. The longer it sits in there, the finer the scotch.

What'll You Have?

The people that order scotch regularly usually drink it straight, on the rocks, or with a little water added. If you would like to try this incredible libation in a mixed drink, have one of these:

Rob Roy
Basically, it's a classic Manhattan, but made with Scotch whisky instead of rye or Tennessee whiskey. We add sweet vermouth and bitters, then garnish it with a lemon or orange twist.

Funky Monkey
We've taken the classic Moscow Mule and switched out the vodka for our delicious Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt Scotch. That, combined with ginger beer and lime in a copper mug, will have you wanting a refill!

You will find a good variety of the best scotches behind our bar. Among these are:
  • Dewar's
  • Glenfiddich
  • Chivas
  • Johnnie Walker - Black & Red
  • Monkey Shoulder
Do you have a favorite Scotch whisky cocktail? Tell us about it. If we've got all of the ingredients behind the bar, one of our talented bartenders will be happy to whip one up for you.

Give Scotch a Try

These drinks make a wonderful addition to the best BBQ at the Lake of the Ozarks, and they are perfect for a drink after dinner too. Give one of these cocktails a try the next time you come in to eat at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse. National Scotch Day makes this week the perfect time to discover this great drink! You just may find something brand new to love once you have a taste.
