The onion rings at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse are hand-breaded to order and deep-fried to a beautiful, crispy, golden brown. Our chipotle ranch dipping sauce pushes the yummy factor over the top.

Who really created onion rings?

The true history of this delicious treat is up for debate. There are a few different stories going around about exactly when they were first created. Some say there was a recipe for "French Fried Onions" in the Middletown, New York Daily Times in 1910, but they do not lay claim to originating the recipe.

Earlier than that, "The Art of Cookery Made Easy and Refined" cookbook from 1802 had a recipe for "Fried Onions with Parmesan Cheese." This recipe suggested cutting the onion into 1/2" rings, then batter-dipping and deep-frying them. Sounds familiar.

Kirby's Pig Stand, which happens to be America's first drive-in restaurant, claim that they invented the onion ring. This was a restaurant chain that originated in Oak Cliff, Texas in the early 1920's and had over 100 locations across the country in the 1940's. They also say that they are responsible for Texas toast.

In 1933, a Crisco advertisement in the New York Times Magazine featured a recipe for deep-fried onion rings. In the 1960's, A&W introduced the onion ring to its menu. While too late to claim creation of this snack, they are credited with making it a popular menu item in fast food restaurants.
